Hardware and Inlay.
This cabinet will be located in a place where space is at a premium. Even a door knob may pose a problem by catching a person's garment when they walk past. The solution is a finger hole in the door or drawer with an accompanying brass ring set flush to the surface.
The door ring is 1" in diameter and the drawer ring is larger-at 1.75"
The drawer ring is made first.
I began by drilling a 1/4inch hole in square out piece of 1/2 thick brass stock. Then I mounded the stock on a 1" piece of tapped steel and chucked it in the lathe where I turned it round.
I move to a drilling operation. First I centered the hole in the vise, then using a 1 1/8" slugger cutter I drilled out one side of the ring.
I was using a tapping block to support the brass and didn't want to mar the surface by cutting all the way through. So I flipped the piece and finished the cut from the other side.
Then it was back to the lathe to bore out the center hole a bit larger.
Now for the door ring. This piece is less complicated. Some 1" brass stock is bored out on the lathe then parted of at a 1/2" thickness.
Here they are ready to go.
