Making the Drawer
Mr. Darcy's Writing Desk page 10
The drawer front was to have a full tambored facade but I decided to keep it to just the middle of the piece. The left and right fields will be developed for the pulls.

I  milled the drawer front from a board of Sapele. It will have gilded dowels inlaid  for the center tambored sections and the border.
Here are the dowels cut and set in place.-Not glued in yet.  The 3/8" border pieces are metered.
The 1/2" verical dowels are proud of the border and I will ease their edges over with a chisel.
The fields to the left and right of the center are open for development of the pull design.
Using a 3/8" end mill, I cut a groove that runs the perimeter of the drawer front -but inset aprox 1/2". This will have a 3/8 Dowel set inside.
Then I switched to a 1/2" box core bit to mill the center veritcle grooves that will receive 1/2" dowels for the tambored section.
Here are the left and right pulls. I drew the design on a 1" thick piece of Sapele. Then I cut out the profile and ripped into with a Japanese pull saw. This gave me matching pieces. Finally-I carved the lines. These pieces will be gilded too.
I like these as individual pieces-but I'm not sure about the overall look when set to the desk. I may cut back the wings on the scrolls.
